Host nation Germany wins comfortably against Scotland in EURO 2024 opening match! Young talents such as Wirtz and Musiala shine
The opening match of EURO 2024 took place, with hosts Germany facing off against Scotland.
Germany started with Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and Toni Kroos in the starting line-up, with Kai Havertz at the front, while Scotland started with Kieran Tierney, Andrew Robertson and John McGinn.
Germany took the lead in the 10th minute. Kroos fed the ball to the right, and Joshua Kimmich crossed it back to Wirtz, who took a shot with his right foot. The ball grazed the goalkeeper’s hand and went into the goal, setting the tone for the opening goal from the young German prodigy.
Then, in the 19th minute, Havertz got behind the defense and passed it to Musiala in the center. Musiala evaded the defender with a skillful touch and smashed the ball into the goal with his right foot, another goal from a talented young player. In the 43rd minute, Kimmich crossed from the right wing and Ilkay Gündogan headed the ball, but it was blocked by a good save from the goalkeeper. However, a foul was committed immediately afterwards, and Germany was awarded a penalty kick. Furthermore, Scotland defender Ryan Porteous was given a straight red card. Havertz scored the penalty kick, and Germany finished the first half with a three-goal lead.
Pascal Gross came on in the second half, followed by Leroy Sané and Niklas Füllkrug in the 63rd minute. Then, in the 68th minute, Füllkrug fired a powerful shot with his right foot into the right side of the goal to score the decisive fourth goal. In the 73rd minute, the dynamic Musiala was replaced by Thomas Müller.
Scotland got a shot back in the closing stages when a cross from a set piece hit Antonio Rüdiger’s head and went into the goal, earning an own goal to pull one back.
However, Germany proved the difference throughout the game, and in the dying seconds Emre Can scored the fifth goal with a controlled shot to give Germany a win in their opening match.
